- Girish Chandra Murmu has assumed office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) from August 8, 2020.
- Murmu made and subscribed to the oath of office before President Ram Nath Kovind.
- His tenure as the new CAG will be up to November 20, 2024.
- He succeeds Rajiv Mehrishi, who demitted office on August 7, 2020.
- He is the 14th Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
About Girish Chandra Murmu :-
- He was born on November 21, 1959 in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.
- Murmu is a post graduate in Political Science from Utkal University.
- He holds an MBA degree from the University of Birmingham.
- He has wide experience in administrative, economic and infrastructure fields.
- A former bureaucrat, Murmu is a 1985-batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre.
- 2019-20 : 1st Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir
- March-Oct 2019 : Expenditure Secretary of India
Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) :-
- The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India is an authority, established by Article 148 of the Constitution of India.
- The CAG is mentioned in the Constitution of India under Article 148 – 151.
- The CAG is ranked 9th and enjoys the same status as a judge of Supreme Court of India in Indian order of precedence.
- CAG audits all receipts and expenditure of the Government of India and the state governments, including those of bodies and authorities substantially financed by the government.
- The reports of the CAG are laid in Parliament/Legislatures and taken into consideration by the Public Accounts Committees (PACs) and Committees on Public Undertakings (COPUs), which are special committees in the Parliament of India and the state legislatures.
- The CAG is also the head of the Indian Audit and Accounts Department, the affairs of which are managed by officers of Indian Audit and Accounts Service.

- The Comptroller and Auditor-General of India is appointed by the President of India following a recommendation by the Prime Minister.
Oath or affirmation :-
- On appointment, he/she has to make an oath or affirmation before the President of India.
