Pradeep Kumar Joshi appointed UPSC Chairman


  • Educationist Pradeep Kumar Joshi was appointed the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
  • Pradeep Kumar Joshi is currently a member in the UPSC. Joshi joined the UPSC as its member on May 12, 2015.
  • He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Arvind Saxena, the outgoing chairman of the UPSC.
  • His tenure as the chairman of the UPSC will be till May 12, 2021.
  • Prior to joining the UPSC, he was the chairman of the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission and the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission.
  • He also served as the Director of National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) :-

  • India's premier central recruiting agency.
  • Responsible for appointments to and examinations for All India services and group A & group B of Central services.
  • Established on - 1 October 1926
  • It was later reconstituted as Federal Public Service Commission by the Government of India Act 1935
  • Lee Commission (1924) - This committee recommended the establishment of a Public Service Commission.

Constitutional status of UPSC :- 

  • Articles 315 to 323 of Part XIV of the constitution, titled as Services Under the Union and the States, provide for a Public Service Commission for the Union and for each state. As per Art. 315, at Union level, Union Public Service Commission is envisaged by it.

Appointment :- 

  • As per Article 316, the Chairman and other members of Union Public Service Commission shall be appointed by the President.
  • The Chairman and other members of a Public Service Commission shall be appointed, in the case of the Union Commission or a Joint Commission, by the President, and in the case of a State Commission, by the Governor of the State.

Term :- 

  • A member of a Public Service Commission shall hold office for a term of six years from the date on which he enters upon his office or until he attains, in the case of the Union Commission, the age of sixty-five years, and in the case of a State Commission or a Joint Commission, the age of sixty-two years, whichever is earlier.
